AI SEO Checklist 2026: 15 Steps to Rank Higher

A practical checklist for using AI tools to optimize your content for search rankings. No theory. Just the steps that actually move the needle.

Before You Write

1. Identify your target keyword. Use Google Search Console to find queries where you already get impressions. These are the easiest wins. Also check Semrush or Ahrefs for keyword difficulty under 30 if targeting new terms.

2. Analyze the SERP. Open the top 10 results for your keyword. Note what content type dominates. List posts? How-to guides? Reviews? Note the average word count. Note which H2s appear in every top-ranking page. These are non-negotiable sections for your article.

3. Build your outline. Create H2s that cover every section the top-ranking pages include, plus one or two they miss. Your competitive edge is the section nobody else thought to write.

During Writing

4. Use Claude or ChatGPT for first drafts. Write section by section, not all at once. Each prompt should specify tone, length, and key points to cover.

5. Include semantically related terms. Run your draft through Surfer SEO or Frase to identify missing NLP terms. Add them naturally. Don’t keyword stuff.

6. Write a compelling title tag. Include your primary keyword. Keep it under 60 characters. Make it clickable. Numbers and power words work: Best, Complete, Ultimate, Honest.

7. Write a meta description under 160 characters. Include the keyword. Tell them what they’ll learn. End with a soft call to action.

After Writing

8. Add internal links. Link to 2-3 related posts on your site. Use descriptive anchor text, not click here.

9. Optimize images. Compress to under 100KB. Add descriptive alt text with keywords where natural. Use WebP format.

10. Add schema markup. Rank Math handles this automatically if installed. Verify your article schema is correct.

11. Check readability. Short paragraphs. Subheadings every 200-300 words. No walls of text. Use Hemingway or the readability check in your SEO plugin.

12. Add a FAQ section. Use People Also Ask data from Google. Answer each question in 2-3 sentences. Add FAQ schema.

13. Submit to Google Search Console. Paste your URL into the inspection tool. Request indexing. This gets your post crawled within hours instead of days.

After Publishing

14. Check rankings after 2 weeks. Don’t touch anything before then. Google needs time to evaluate new content.

15. Update and re-optimize after 30 days. Check what terms you’re ranking for in Search Console. Add missing topics. Refresh stale data. Re-submit to Google.

Repeat this process for every post. Consistency beats one-off optimization every time.
